Expert Advice on Green Buildings

CFC Reduction in HVAC Equipment

The intent of this LEED prerequisite is to reduce ozone depletion by reducing or eliminating the use of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Do not use CFC-based refrigerants in new base building HVAC&R systems. For existing base building HVAC equipment, complete a CFC “phase-out” prior to project completion.

R-410A Rooftop Systems

A LEED pre-requisite is that HVAC equipment must not use a CFC refrigerant. An additional point can be earned if the refrigerant is not an HCFC (such as HCFC-22 and HCFC-123). HFC-410A, HFC-407C and HFC-134a are considered green refrigerants and earn the extra LEED
point.
