Green Product Certification: Is Third Party Certification Necessary?

Share

Felicia asks: Do products need to have third party certification in order to account for leed points? i.e. for recycled content.

Answer:Dear Felicia, thank you for your question.

There are third-party certifications available for green building products, such as Green Seal, but this is not required in a product contributing to LEED credits.

What is more important is the documentation from the manufacturer that shows the percentage of recycled content or local, regional material content. If you end up in an appeal situation then it is possible that a third-party certification could help your case, but it is not required.

You can go to www.greenseal.org for more information about their third-party certification process, and to www.usgbc.org for more about the LEED certification process.
