LEED Project Experience: Over Qualified but Still Ineligible for LEED AP?

Share

David asks: Is there an alternate path to eligibility for the LEED AP. It is very difficult to obtain experience on a LEED project due to the limited number of projects. I am now a building plans examiner, but I am a Register Professional Engineer with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering also have over 30 years experience in environmental engineering, including air pollution water pollution, industrial hygene, and noise pollution. I have given numerous workshops, have research papers published in peer reviewed journals, and experience in control of air humidity and air quality. In reading the "Green Associate Study Guide, it appears that at one time it was possible to become eligible based on experience and study. Does such an option still exist?

Thank You

Answer: Hi David, thank you for your question. I am sure that someone with your experience and background could be very useful on a range of green building projects.

The short answer to your question is that after June 30th, 2009, in order to qualify to take the LEED AP exam, all LEED AP candidates must have documented experience working on a LEED Registered Project. Prior to that date, this requirement did not exist. Also, LEED AP candidates must also pass the LEED Green Associate (Tier I) exam before they can earn their LEED AP credential, whereas this initial hurdle did not exist prior to June 30th, 2009, either (I'm sure you're already aware of this since you're reading a LEED Green Associate study guide). Once you become qualified to take the LEED AP exam, you may choose to take the LEED Green Associate separately (on an earlier date) from your LEED AP exam or take both exams sequentially on the same date (the LEED Green Associate exam is "Part 1" and the LEED AP specialty exam is "Part 2" of the LEED AP exam).

While it seems like the number of LEED Registered Projects is increasing every day, it is often difficult for someone (even with your level of experience) to get work on a LEED project. The good news is that, in reality, there is always a need for smart people to assist in promoting the success of LEED in the field. The GreenStep Professional Project Experience Program may be something you should consider. Participants work on a LEED Registered project that includes elements that span various LEED rating systems, such as LEED NC, LEED CI, LEED CS and LEED EBOM. There is a fair amount of work involved, however, upon successful completion of the program, participants are provided with a thorough letter describing in detail each team member's extended involvement in the LEED project and how his or her efforts helped complete specific credit requirements and move the project closer towards LEED Certification.

Your experience may be perfect for such an opportunity. For more information, read the FAQ on this page. Good luck!
