Mic asks: Are LEED Exams are taken on separate dates or consecutively in one exam session?

Answer: Hi Mic, thank you for your question. You have a few options when taking the LEED AP exam. As you know, there are two exams that you have to take to earn the LEED AP credential. You may choose to take these exams separately (on separate dates) or you may choose to take the exams consecutively on the same date.

We generally recommend that people take the exams on separate dates. To do this, you sign up for the LEED Green Associate exam with GBCI. LEED Green Associate is the Tier I credential and the exam you take to earn this credential is the equivalent of Part 1 of the LEED AP exam. If you pass the LEED Green Associate test, you will earn that credential. Then, assuming you have LEED Registered Project experience, you may sign up to take the LEED AP exam, skip the Part 1 exam and take only the LEED AP specialty portion of the exam to earn your LEED AP.

By taking the exams on separate dates, it will take longer for you to earn your LEED AP credential. However, because of the amount of material that needs to be memorized to pass both exams, you should benefit from focusing on each exam separately and the chances for you to pass should increase. The danger of taking the exams on the same day is if you fail one portion of the LEED AP exam, you will not earn any credential.
