Bhavesh, thanks for your question. This is definitely an interesting issue because as many people interested in green building design and sustainability know, LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lights can provide a long lasting and energy efficient lighting solution. LEDs are commonly involved in building lighting components such as decorative lighting (both interior and exterior) as well as electronic equipment and exit signs.

What are LEDs?

LEDs are, by definition, a semiconductor diode that emits light when a voltage is applied to it and that is used especially in electronic devices. Historically LEDs have been employed over and over again as indicator lights in electronics. As a matter of fact, as I write this, I’m sitting in close proximity to no less than 10 LEDs. But, if I were at work, in the presence of my Z-Bar LED task lamp, that number would be more like 75. Using that example, for desktop lighting you can see the savings associated with using a combined input of 9W compared to a typical 30W (or more) bulb.

The use of LEDs as functional lighting (i.e. not purely aesthetic) is somewhat of a new and still emerging area. But with some motivation, such as the European Union phasing out incandescent totally by 2012, technologies like high-brightness light-emitting diodes (HB-LEDs) are becoming more prevalent. And even here in the states, the ARRA has in many states, provided funding for properties to investigate and install HB-LEDs as functional lighting. Two companies at the forefront of LED design that you might want to look into more are Cree Inc, Philips and C. Crane.

Advantages of LEDs include:

• The US Department of Energy expects the cost of producing LEDs to decline below that of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in about 2013.
• High level of energy efficiency.
• More durable.
• Extended product lifetime.
• Reduced heat load to the space (an added benefit from reduced energy usage).

Disadvantages of LEDs include:

• "Warm" lighting generated by LEDs is more expensive than "cold" lighting.
• LEDs are more expensive than more some more traditional lighting concepts.
• Limited selections and options.
• Color quality.
• Lack of product standardization.

My recommendation while sourcing LED lighting would be to first find several reputable manufacturers’ representatives in your area. This person/company would be able to answer all of your specific questions as well as help perform cost/benefit calculations to determine the best course of action for your project.

Ultimately first, you have to ask yourself what your goals are for pursuing LED lighting and based on the known advantages and disadvantages, which aspects do you have to have or are willing to sacrifice to meet your needs. Good luck!
