Trent asks: We are located 70 miles south of Kansas City and have a commercial building we are putting up that should qualify (for section 179d) but we need to find a contractor or engineer that can help us file the appropriate form for the IRS to get the deduction. Where do we find qualified contractors or engineers to do this work? What are the required credentials to claim the deduction?
Hi Trent, thank you for your question.
There is no listing of providers out there for Section 179d qualified contractors that I am aware of. We would be happy to help you as I am sure other providers would be. If you search for 179D or Energy Efficient Commercial Building deduction I am sure other providers would come up.
The required credentials are a licensed contractor or Professional Engineer in the state in which the building is located. They have to follow IRS notices 2006-52 and 2008-40, Internal Revenue Code § 179D, NREL checklists, ASHRAE 90.1-2001, ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G, and California Title 24. They also must be willing to sign the perjury statement and defend it in the case of an audit.
Hope this helps,
Matt

Sat, 03/26/2011 - 17:49 — John Bartlett (not verified)Hi Trent,
I am with Boaz Roofing and in the process of trying to find the same. I see many in other areas of the country, but not face to face in Kansas City.
I would say two things:
1) I found http://www.kbkg.com that says they operate nationally and have emailed them to see if they have a local office. I would like my end clients to have a local representative.
2) If you have not explored roofing options yet, please feel free to take a look at http://www.boazroofing.com and give me a call.. ok, i had to throw that in.. it is in my blood LOL
