Water treatment for HVAC systems is a design strategy that occasionally is overlooked. This could be for several reasons, but the most common are that people don’t think it’s that important or aren’t familiar or comfortable enough with it to know what to specifically ask for when it comes to specifications.

I’m definitely not any kind of water treatment expert, but I do know that the three most important things to avoid in an HVAC water system are scale, corrosion and biological growth. I also know that there are a lot of chemicals out there and even more combinations and recommendations. Each water treatment provider or consultant can have slightly different opinions about what the best course of action may be. Similarly, no two systems are alike and what works for one may not make sense for another. This has to do with system materials, water quality, and many other factors.

With Green Buildings on the forefront of many designer’s minds these days, some may be looking to alternatives to traditional chemical treatment systems. Enter Water Conservation Technology International, Inc. This company provides their patented zero bleed silica based cooling water treatment system to licensees (typically water treatment providers) who sell their system to the public.

The WCTI system is advertised to mitigate scale, corrosion and bio-fouling without utilizing blow down water or wasting chemicals through utilization of ‘state of the art’ corrosion and scale inhibition at 10-150,000 total dissolved solids (TDS) tower water, and allows for operation at high TDS with zero tower blow down. Therefore, water and chemical use reduction and cost savings are achieved without acid, scale or corrosion risks.

The system is composed of a proprietary pre-conditioning system removes scale forming ions from tower make-up water, bonds the silica found in water naturally with sodium from a pre-conditioning system to create a ‘green’ corrosion inhibitor, and capability of high TDS to increase Ph level which prohibits bio & pathogen growth.

Benefits of the WCTI system include a total reduction of treatment cost of up to 50%, ideal corrosion protection for steel, copper, galvanized and aluminum systems, non-toxic, discharge elimination, no chemical handling or storage, reduced testing and operator time and elimination of ‘bleed and feed’ chemistry. Benefits for the owner include reduced wand chemical consumption, which correlates to cost savings and a high return on investment. Plus, WCTI claims that through utilization of this system you’ll also see improved results compared to a traditional chemical treatment system.
