Question:

Hi my name is Jordan, and I am curious about becoming LEED GA certified. In college several guest speakers came in to speak about LEED programs, and now that I am working at Thornton Tomasetti I am interested in becoming LEED GA certified. My question has to do with my eligibility for the GA test; specifically, if my time at Thornton Tomasetti qualifies as "Employment (or previous employment) in a sustainable field of work". As Thornton Tomasetti is highly involved in quite a few LEED certified projects, and a majority of the employees are LEED certified, I would assume it would count as a "sustainable field of work". However, I have been unable to find clarification, and was hoping you could help me out. Thank you for your help!

Hi Jordan, thank you for your question.

Based on your described background I can see why you interest in the LEED Green Associate Program.

The prerequisite requirements for becoming a LEED GA as pertains to experience are somewhat vague as I am sure you have realized and hence you have come to us.

Thornton Tomasetti is an awesome brand with a number of sustainable initiatives, but that alone is not going to get you accredited.

Based on the Green Building Certification Institute’s (GBCI) candidate handbook you will need an official letter (on the company letterhead) from your employer supervisor/ project manager etc confirming your employment, a description of the field of trade and your role in that company.

Analyzing the information you have provided I am not able to truly assess your position, as working for a sustainable company does not quantify your experience in sustainability according to the USGBC’s requirements or any other standard.

I hope however this will allow you to assess your current role at the company and your duties account for working knowledge of sustainability.

You can download the detailed handbook from the USGBC’s website. Another suggestion I can make is signing up for one of our prep programs which will help in your efforts to meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
