Green Cleaning Products: Can My Products Earn LEED Points?

Question:

Matt asks: Hi, I've got a question about LEED points and a specific cleaning product. My company sells Envirox cleaning products, hydrogen peroxide based cleaners. One of their products is EPA certified and one is Green Seal Certified. My question is, do both of those products qualify for LEED points? Or by being EPA registered does that cancel out a product?

Hi Matt, thank you for your question.

I am assuming you are referring to IEQ Credit 3.3 Green Cleaning – Purchase of Sustainable Cleaning Products and Materials – which states you can earn one point if 30% or more of your purchases of Cleaning Products and Materials (which includes disposable paper, liners, cleaning chemicals) meet one or more of numerous criteria - one of which is being Green Seal Certified. So your Green Seal Certified Product would help in the process of earning the point for IEQ Credit 3.3.

The other product you mention as being EPA registered means it is registered as a sanitizer or a disinfectant. The EPA requires chemical manufacturers to register their sanitizers and disinfectants with them under FIFRA (The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act). So yes this product will not count towards the 30% requirement to earn one point for the credit.

Put another way – if the total annual spend of Cleaning Products and Materials is $100 at least $30 of that spend must meet the criteria listed in the Credit.

Hope this helps!
