Smita asks: Hello... I am an Architect (India) and I am interested in appearing for LEED exam and wondering which LEED Professional Credential should I select if I am interested in practicing in designing building and in construction management arena as well. Also, if I live in India, could I select any registered project (for LEED) in India itself as a case study to maintain my credentials to appear for LEED exam. Thank you for your support.
Dear Smita
LEED is still a fairly new concept in India with less than 700 building registered. So unlike the US we do not have multiple disciplines under LEED. There is only one exam which directly awards you the LEED AP credentials but I understand that the American system will be introduced in the International Green building congress at Chennai in October.
The exam itself is not a thorough test of your design or construction management skills in fact it does not have much to do with architecture at all.
The purpose of the exam is to test your knowledge of the LEED rating system along with your awareness of the environment and the impact of building(s) to its surrounding eco-system.
Having said that there is nothing stopping you from getting the American qualification which at this point in time is far more comprehensive. You will get additional information on www.USGBC.org and www.gbci.org.
In India the LEED AP certification is awarded by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Becoming a LEED AP in India is fairly straight forward and the exam itself is slightly less challenging than the one in the US. The first step is to register online with the IGBC. I have included the link below. You will be asked your preferred date and examination centre. The exam itself is conducted by a company called Meritrac and they will send in the examination pack which will contain all the information you need once IGBC receives your examination fee.

Over 70% of the questions will come from the LEED India NC reference guide. For the remaining you will have to polish your general knowledge on green buildings, environmental impact of buildings on the environment etc. I suggest you take some sample tests before you take the actual exam to learn where you stand.
Finally, experience on any LEED registered project should be acceptable for eligibility to take the LEED AP exam.
Hope this helps.

I am a LEED AP like you, and I got my certification thru USGBC before they had the IGBC exam here. I am currently trying to upgrade to being a LEED AP with speciality BD+C thru their credit maintenance program. My question is whether I also need to take the IGBC LEED AP exam too as a practicing architecting India. Second question do you have to get the building certified in India from IGBC ,now that we have the India version/ chapters or can you still take it to USGBC? Hope you can shed some light on my quandary !
LEED certification in India

Just to clarify, it is not called the IGBC LEED AP exam, it is simply IGBC AP. An IGBC AP cannot claim to be a LEED AP unless he/she passes the exam conducted by the GBCI. You do not need to take the IGBC AP exam to qualify for you LEED AP BD+C exam. IGBC AP credential will help you only if you are working on projects registered to receive one of the ratings provided by the IGBC.
You can get a building certified from both IGBC and USGBC but I do not see why anyone would want to get a certification from USGBC. The IGBC has an MOU with the USGBC to provide the LEED India certification. So there is no reason to register your project with the USGBC.
