Many people have been asking about the IGBC AP and LEED AP credentials in India.

Here are a few clarifications from the IGBC with regards to their own credentials and the credentials provided by the USGBC.

1. Any professional passing the IGBC AP exam can only use the IGBC AP credentials behind his/her name, they cannot use LEED AP or LEED India AP.

2. LEED AP is an international credential where as IGBC AP is for India only.

So a LEED AP or an IGBC AP can get 1 point under Innovation and design credit 2 for projects in India. But an IGBC AP cannot claim this point for projects outside India. LEED AP can participate in projects in any country that follows the LEED system.

3. IGBC does not follow the 3 tier (i.e. LEED Green Associate, LEED AP, LEED Fellow) system like the USGBC does and hence the IGBC AP exam is open to all.

I have been told the difficulty level of questions is usually a mix of LEED GA and LEED AP. So one does not have to be as prepared as a LEED AP to take the exam... At the same time one cannot pass the exam without having a thorough knowledge of every credit and the compliance requirements.

4. LEED AP and LEED GA exams are now available in all major cities in India at one of the Prometric or Everonn centres.

I mentioned in one of my responses that LEED AP or GA exams cannot be taken in India (I am taking my LEED GA exam next month in Chennai), however this is no longer the case.
