Hi Betty,

I would use Ecos Paints, they have paint that is odorless, VOC- free and organic. It was originally manufactured in the UK but now is available in the US.

They carry a primer that adsorbs and permanently neutralizes 99% of formaldehyde and other VOC's. It is called MDF Passivating Primer and can be purchased at EcosPaints.net.

They also have about 108 colors to choose from and other products such as sealers and varnish.

Good luck!
