Kishore asks: What is the VOC guideline / requirement for INDOOR - Waterbase Primer
for concrete and metal surface, INDOOR - Oil base Primer for concrete and metal
surface and INDOOR - concrete Floor Paint? Can you help? Thanks!
Hi Kishore,
Thanks for your question. According to the guidelines from Green Seal, which are incorporated into the LEED guidelines, the following are healthy Low VOC limits:
* For any interior coating, in a non-flat finish: 150 grams/liter of product minus water
* For any interior coating in a flat finish: 50 grams/liter of product minus water
* For any exterior coating in a non-flat finish: 200 grams/liter of product minus water
* For any exterior coating in a flat finish: 100 grams/liter of product minus finish.
Other agencies and paint manufacturers offer their own guidelines for VOC limits, and you will see these advertised by many companies. The best thing to do is to ask for a Technical Data Sheet (these are available at the counter of a paint store or online) for the products you are considering, and check the VOC amounts there. You’ll find a huge variation even within the products that market themselves as Low VOC and green.
