Lata asks: I have read about ductless split air conditioners but I don't understand what the benefits are? Why are ductless splits considered green? Thank you.
Hi Lata,
Thanks for your question.
Are ductless air conditioners green? It’s all a matter of degree.
* Ductless air conditioners are often recommended in building retrofit situations where it does not make sense to rip out walls or to add soffits to accommodate new duct runs.
* They are also easily set up to offer cooling to different zones instead of a single zone, thereby allowing the occupants to have control over their temperature environment.
* If an occupant wants to cool only one room, for example, then the system offers that possibility without cooling the whole space.
* Without duct runs, there is also a reduced chance of air leakage, which also saves energy.
To answer your question: yes, ductless air conditioners are green.
A better choice, though, is to forego the air conditioner in lieu of an old fashioned ceiling fan that works to make the human body feel cooler rather than actually changing the temperature of the surrounding air.
Hope that helps!

Sat, 09/25/2010 - 20:21 — marcus (not verified)If your choices are to purchase other room air conditioners (window, wall, or portables) or ductless mini-split air conditioners, ductless mini-splits are almost always going to be more efficient. We stock units as highly energy effient as 21.0 SEER. In fact the Samsung Vivace model (rated with a 19.0 SEER) and offers Smart-Inverter to adjust the temperature when necessary is even more efficient than many others. Window units rarely have a higher EER than 10.0.
As to your question about other benefits; among others, they are extremely quiet since the compressor sits outside and you don't have to run a huge central system since you're only occupying one room.
