LEED for New Construction: How do I earn Innovation in Design Credits?

 
Question:

John asks: Can a Innovation and Design credit be obtained for any of the following on a LEED New construction project: 1) developing and implementing a health and safety management system (E.g. safework procedures, inspections, audits by third party consultants, plans, etc. - all documented) 2) Environmental inspections during constructions conducted by third party consultants (e.g. monitoring & inspecting erosion & Sedimentation control practices, storage of materials, protection of existing flora & Fauna, water/air/noise pollution, etc.) Thanks.

Hi John

You can’t really say if an Innovation in Design (ID) credit will or will not be accepted. A method for Innovation in Design accepted on one project does not mean it will be accepted on another.

With that being said you can achieve an ID credit in two ways, one is through Exemplary Performance where you will need to show that your intentions surpass the original intent of the credit by doubling the credit requirements and/or achieving the next incremental percentage threshold. The second way would be for in Innovation Performance where you need to quantify the environmental benefits of your proposal.

For your question use the Innovative Performance part of the credit. To make sure that the Innovative Performance credit could be accepted you will have to create a proposal like a credit with the following criteria. It has to have intent, requirement(s) for compliance, submittal(s) to demonstrate compliance such as description of contractual and procedural requirements, performance level for measurement, policies and or post-occupancy strategies, and a summary of potential design approaches that may be used to meet the requirements. Basically by creating the Innovative performance submittal this way will show other Designers how to do it as well.
