Jeff, no, there is no

Jeff,
no, there is no requirement that says you must be working to take the LEED GA exam.
According to GBCI, elegibility requirements for the LEED GA exam are:

-EITHER documented involvement on a project registered or certified for LEED
-OR employment (or previous employment) in a sustainable field of work
-OR engagement in (or completion of) an education program that addresses green building principles.

If you meet one of these 3 criteria, you are elegible to take the LEED GA exam.

For more information, go to www.gbci.org and download the LEED GA exam guide.

Good Luck!

LEED GA Exam: Am I Eligible if I am Unemployed?

There are certain requirements to be eligible to sit-in on the LEED Green Associate exam. It depends on your field of work, educational background, and/or LEED project involvement. There are three eligibility requirements, and you must only satisfy one category. The categories are summarized below, but also found at http://www.gbci.org/Exam-Guide/Eligibility/LEED-Green-Associate.aspx:

1. Education - If you have a degree in engineering or architecture, you are automatically eligible to take the exam.

2. LEED Project Involvement – If you have been involved in a LEED registered project in the past three years, you are eligible to take the exam.

3. Employment – If you are currently employed in a green or sustainable line of work, you are eligible to take the exam. More specifically, the GBCI website states: “current or previous employment in a sustainable field of work.”

I assume you are in the green/sustainable field. Even though you are currently unemployed, if your past working experience focuses on environmentalism or the green building industry, then you are eligible to take the exam.

However, you do still need a letter of recommendation of previous employment. I would recommend talking to a former manager or supervisor for this letter.

Good luck!
