The growing demand in the U.S. for products containing recycled and repurposed materials was the idea that recycled surfaces manufacturing company Curava in 2008. Curava manufactures recycled countertop surfaces that combine recycled glass, seashells, and clay pottery fragments with a cement binder to offer a beautiful, affordable, eco-friendly surfacing product.

The company’s knowledge of stone fabrication allowed them to focus on creating a new product that maximizes the amount of recycled material while adding protective surface elements and offer this product at an affordable price. The material can be implemented for use as countertop, fireplace surround, outdoor kitchens, bathroom vanities, shower & tub surrounds, tabletops and furniture.

Each countertop product includes approximately 70% recycled glass. The company strives to utilize locally-sourced materials and labor in the manufacture of their product. These recycled materials are sourced from both post-consumer (beer and wine bottles, demolition, jars, window glass) and post-industrial sources (pottery factories). Slabs are available in 114”x26”x1-1/4” and customized for each application from local distributors.

Sustainable manufacturing

The process used to manufacture Curava is sustainable as well. The company's manufacturing facility utilizes only daylighting, results in zero water waste, and consumer minimal electricity. The material and equipment required to handle, fabricate and install Curava slabs and countertops are very similar in nature to those used for marble and granite. Maintenance of Curava is designed to be simple as well, with annual resealing (a 5 minute process) and regular cleaning (wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap) will help this extremely durable product perform at its peak for the entirety of the ten year product warranty (from installation).

Curava offers eight color options in their standard collection (Golden Poppy, Etruscan Green, Calypso Blue, Frost White, Autumn Leaves, Inthira Black, Aqua Sand and Sepia Wheat) with twelve additional options in their ‘Splendid Collection’ and twelve final options in their ‘Limited Collection’ (available for large commercial projects only).

LEED Applications
For LEED green building projects, Curava may contribute toward earning LEED Materials & Resources credits 4.1, 4.2, Indoor Environmental Quality credit 4.1 (contains no VOCs) and an Innovation in Design credit (recycled content greater than 30% post-consumer).

Curava is certified by NSF International and a member of the US Green Building Council.
