LEED Certification: Do All Prerequisites Need to Be Met?

Question:

Deann asks: I'm currently working on the LEED certification for new construction. My question is, if you don't pass the SSP1 (Pre-Requisite, like ESC weekly checklist, etc) Will you still be able to obtain LEED certification? Or will it only erase your point in SS point? or for the whole points, since it is pre-requisite. FYI our goal is silver LEED. thanks.

Hi Deann, thanks for your question regarding prerequisite credits for LEED.

All LEED Prerequisites Required

The answer is no, your project will not be able to earn LEED certification without meeting Sustainable Sites Prerequisite 1: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention. Your project must complete every prerequisite credit within the LEED rating system to earn LEED certification, no matter which rating level you aim to achieve.

This means that for your project to earn LEED certification under the LEED New Construction rating system, it will need to earn the prerequisite credits in Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality.

The only credit categories without prerequisites are Innovation in Design and Regional Priority, which means that they are the only credit categories that your team can choose to avoid completely.

Thanks again, Deann. I hope this helps, and good luck!
