Recycled Pavers from VAST

VAST® Composite Permeable Pavers are made with 95% recycled materials.

What makes these pavers different from other permeable pavers is the word “composite.” VAST utilizes scrap tires and bottles to make their pavers lighter and more durable, while keeping tens of thousands of tires and bottles from entering the landfill or being burned.

The manufacturing process of these pavers requires less than ¼ of the energy and releases about 1/10th of the carbon dioxide compared to similar concrete products.

Unsightly efflorescence (mineral deposits due to moisture transmittance), which is common with unsealed concrete products, is not an issue with these composite pavers. They are also less susceptible to weatherization and color fading. The tensile strength inherent to the composite construction also means that these pavers will not crack.

These pavers weigh less than a third of comparable concrete pavers (8.2 vs. 30 pounds per square foot), so the energy required to transport them and move them around on the job site is greatly reduced.

Environmental Benefits of Permeable Pavers

The open-graded base beneath and in between the pavers allows water to infiltrate at a rate of 480 inches per hour, reducing the need for the expensive network of stormwater catchment structures and large-diameter storm sewer piping.

Their patented grid placement system allows installers to maintain consistently precise inter-paver spacing, ensuring rainwater catchment performance and drastically reducing installation time.

These products are also ideal for roof installations.

LEED Credit Overview

VAST Composite Permeable Pavers help to achieve the following credits in the LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major Renovations rating system:

Sustainable Sites Credits 6.1 and 6.2: Stormwater Design – Quantity and Quality Control, 1 point each.

The mass of open-graded aggregate below the pavers acts as a temporary stormwater detention area, thereby reducing the peak flow of stormwater, and can strip away pollutants in the runoff, improving the water quality of the stormwater leaving the site.

Materials and Resources Credit 4 : Recycled Content, up to 2 points.

The pavers contain a very high percentage of recycled content (95%), which can contribute significantly towards achieving this credit.

Materials and Resources Credit 5: Regional Materials, up to 2 points.

For projects in the Minnesota region, VAST can provide you with documentation of the percentage of the materials used to manufacture their pavers extracted, harvested or recovered and manufactured within 500 miles.

In the near future, VAST plans to manufacture pavers in colors that comply with the minimum Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) value of 29 as required by Sustainable Sites Credits 7.1 and 7.2: Heat Island Effect – Nonroof and Roof.

If VAST products were used on a site that is to be demolished as part of your project, they can be easily recovered, returned, and recycled as part of the VAST manufacturing process, which can contribute to achieving Materials and Resources Credit 2: Construction Waste Management, worth up to 2 points.
