Larry asks: We are able to provide certificates toward a customer’s LEED certification. My question is how can I market my services to potential customers who are working towards getting a LEED certification? We rip out, remove and recycle waste carpet from business' and homes.
Hi Larry, thanks for this great question.
Carpet removal and recycling is a valuable service and would be appropriate for any LEED certification project.
First off, you should create a document that states how your service (or product) may be able to contribute to LEED certification.
There are four incremental levels of LEED certification (Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum). Each requires earning a certain number of points. The greater the number of points, the higher a building's level of certification.
Produce a downloadable PDF explaining which LEED prerequisites and/or credits your product or service might may be able to earn. This information should be clear and credible and state why a product or service is appropriate for LEED. Unfortunately, many times we have questioned the accuracy of product/service claims because the company guarantees LEED certification, or claims that their product is "LEED Certified", when there is no such thing.
A LEED professional can help you evaluate the applicability of your product or service to the LEED rating systems.
Companies that have green building products or services can apply for a Green Buildings Certification Report (GBCR).
A GBCR examines qualified green building products through the lens of each of the nine LEED rating systems to determine which are appropriate for the product. The result is a detailed report describing which LEED prerequisites and/or credits the product may contribute to for any and all appropriate LEED systems. Companies that are interested in hiring a LEED consultant or those that require an outside assistance from a second or third party evaluation typically use this approach. Information can be found on our Green Buildings Certification Report page.
Another excellent way to market your green building product or service is to send representatives to green building expos. Many green building professionals, including LEED accredited professionals, attend these expos, so you can market directly to your target audience.
Websites such as Greenbiz and BuildingGreen list green building events, including trade shows and expos, that might be advantageous for your company to attend.
Greenbuild
A prime example of a green building expo where you can market your service is Greenbuild. This conference is hosted by the USGBC, which is the nonprofit organization that created the LEED rating systems.
In 2011, over 23,000 people attended Greenbuild. Many of these attendees are LEED accredited professionals, not only because the conference is run by the USGBC, but also because the conference has many LEED continuing education courses.
Building Energy
Building Energy is a conference and trade show for renewable energy and green building professionals, hosted by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association.
Building Energy has 80 accredited sessions and workshops about many green building and renewable energy topics, so it attracts green building professionals - probably including some who work with LEED.
In 2011, there were almost 4000 attendees, and they are expecting 5000 in 2012.
Green building products databases are a great way to market your product because professionals working on LEED or green building product use these databases to find products specific to their needed application.
EcoScorecard
EcoScorecard is a web-based tool that helps architects and designers measure the environmental impact of products against major green building rating systems, such as LEED, CHPS, REGREEN, Green Globes and the Green Guide for Healthcare.
EcoScorecard allows consumers to search it's database of participating manufacturers for free. This means that if your product is listed on EcoScorecard, professionals looking for products that qualify for LEED can visit EcoScorecard and learn more about your product's features and specifications.
BuildingGreen: GreenSpec
GreenSpec is BuildingGreen.com's online guide that lists over 2200 green building products. Products are listed in the guide if they meet the guidelines described in Environmental Building News, BuildingGreen.com's publication.
Unlike ecoScorecard, product manufacturers cannot pay to list or advertise their green building products in GreenSpec. Instead, GreenSpec editors select products to feature in the guide. However, you can submit a product suggestion to GreenSpec, though there is no guarantee that your product will be listed.
On BuildingGreen.com, professionals can search the for the GreenSpec-listed products specifically based on the LEED credit they are trying to achieve. This is a helpful tool for LEED professionals - and a helpful marketing tool for your company to market directly to them.
