In May 2011, TOTO introduced its ultra high-efficiency urinal, which uses only .125 (1/8) gallon per flush (gpf).
TOTO’s urinal uses 75% less water than the traditional 1 gpf urinal. According to TOTO, their high efficiency urinal could save 30,000 gallons per year.
TOTO, the world’s largest plumbing manufacturer, is based in Georgia. For over 90 years, TOTO has designed plumbing products that are not only high-performance and high quality, but also conserve water. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deemed TOTO a Water Efficiency Leader, making it the only plumbing manufacturer to carry the title.
Types of High Efficiency Urinals
TOTO offers four models of its high-efficiency urinals (.125 gpf).
Two of the models are commercial washout high-efficiency urinals, starting at $215. One model has a top spud inlet and the other has a back spud inlet.
The other two models are commercial washout high-efficiency urinals with Sanagloss. The Sanagloss ceramic glaze prevents debris and mold from sticking to the surface of the urinal. These come with either a top spud or back spud inlet as well. These models start at $280.
All of the models of high-efficiency urinals meet the ADA disability guidelines.
Since TOTO's high efficiency urinals conserve water, they could contribute to LEED in the Water Efficiency credit category.
According to the LEED for New Construction rating system, TOTO's high efficiency, .125 gpf urinal could contribute to the following credits:
• Water Efficiency (WE) Prerequisite 1, Water Use Reduction (0 points): This credit requires that the building uses 20% less water than the baseline. Since LEED's baseline for commercial urinals is 1 gpf, TOTO's .125 gpf exceeds the 20% reduction requirement.
• WE Credit 2, Innovative Wastewater Technologies (2 points): This credit is intended to reduce wastewater generation and decrease potable water use. One of the options is to reduce potable water use for sewage by 50%. Water-conserving urinals are specifically mentioned as a potential strategy, and TOTO's high efficiency urinals are extremely water efficient, making them ideal for this credit.
• Water Efficiency (WE) Credit 3, Water Use Reduction (2-4 points): This credit is the same as Prerequisite 1, except it awards points for greater levels of water reduction. It awards 2 points for 30% water reduction, 3 points for 35%, and 4 points for 40%. TOTO's urinals are 75% more efficient than the 1 gpf baseline, so it can contribute to this credit.
