Evolution Paving Resources, a company based in Salem, Oregon, produces pervious concrete pavement.
Their Ultimate Series of Architectural Pervious Concrete was named one of the Top 10 Green Building Products of 2010 by Sustainable Industries.
Evolution's Ultimate Pervious Concrete uses "zero runoff" technology to reduce stormwater runoff and looks similar to regular concrete.
Evolution's products, though pervious, achieve 2000-2500 psi for strength. Plus, they use smaller aggregates to keep out debris and reduce maintenance.
Environmental Benefits of Ultimate Pervious Pavement
According to Evolution, their pervious pavement (including the Ultimate series) delivers the following benefits:
• Zero runoff
• Recharges groundwater
• Filters stormwater pollutants
• Cooler temperature than asphalt, which reduces heat island effect
Also, their pavements are compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act and Portland, Oregon's Clean River Rewards Program.
Since Ultimate Pervious Pavement helps to reduce stormwater runoff and heat island effect, it can contribute to a LEED project. According to LEED for New Construction 2009, it can potentially contribute to the following credits:
• Sustainable Sites (SS) Credit 6, Stormwater Design (2 points):
This credit has two components. Credit 6.1 deals with controlling the quantity of stormwater, while credit 6.2 deals with the quality. Both include pervious paving as strategies to reduce runoff and pollution of water flows. Therefore, Evolution's pervious pavement could contribute to this credit.
• SS Credit 7.1, Heat Island Effect - Nonroof (1 point): This credit aims to reduce heat island effect. One strategy for this credit is using hardscape with a solar reflectance index (SRI) of at least 29. According to Evolution, some of their products meet the SRI criteria, helping to achieve this credit.
