Recycling Programs: MR Prerequisite 1

Question:

Is there a LEED recycling program that I can do for my building?

Answer:

There are many ways to create recycling programs, but to the extent that there is a definition of a green building recycling program, basic LEED certification requires compliance with the LEED program's "Materials and Resources" section.

A basic prerequisite (Prerequisite 1) of this section is that a recycling program must be in place at your building. The sorting of corrugated cardboard and plastics must be in place at your building in addition to paper, glass and metals recycling in order to comply with the LEED prerequisite. The intent of the prerequisite is to "facilitate the reduction of waste produced by building occupants that is hauled and disposed of in landfills."

An area within the building must be allocated which is dedicated to the recycling program and where collection, sorting and storage of materials can take place.
