In terms of existing building retrofits on campus (by far the most promising area for positive change in terms of sustainability at U.S. schools) Duke University, UC Santa Barbara, Emory University and California State University system's Moss Landing Marine Laboratories all have LEED-EB certified buildings on campus.
LEED EB serves not only to make existing buildings more energy efficient, but also a LEED building has the potential to become an educational tool for the student body through which it may better understand the importance of sustainability. Green buildings are more positive learning environments both in terms of improvements to indoor environmental quality and atmosphere as well as being demonstration laboratories that can be incorporated into a green-school curriculum.
In terms of cutting edge new school construction, at the GreenBuild 2008 Conference, Project Frog will exhibit its energy efficient building system for a modular, prefabricated green schools system that limits a building's impact on the environment. Project Frog aims to create buildings with recycled materials, less construction cost, rapid development, abundant daylighting, good acoustics and superior air quality.
