Expert Advice on Green Buildings

Northern Virginia Office Building Awarded the ENERGY STAR

Mosby Tower, an established provider of affordable, entrepreneurial office space in the Northern Virginia market, was recently awarded the Energy Star for high efficiency commercial buildings. The Energy Star is awarded to buildings that meet strict energy performance levels set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Only buildings that are more efficient than 75% of buildings in their class are awarded the Energy Star.

Based on actual meter readings for energy and electricity usage, Mosby Tower is more energy efficient than 83% of buildings in its class. The building is now listed on the EnergyStar.gov's Registry of buildings that have earned the Energy Star.

Over the course of 2007 and 2008, Mosby Tower's management pursued an overall green building strategy, starting with energy reduction. To earn the Energy Star, management hired a Certified Green Building Engineer to certify the building as Energy Star compliant. The process requires measuring energy performance over a full year and then submitting certified performance measurements to the EPA for approval.

In addition to the Energy Star, Mosby Tower has begun a comprehensive retrogreening effort to not only become more energy efficient, but also to improve indoor environmental quality for our tenants at the property. Effective January 1st, Mosby Tower will only use low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints at the property. VOCs are common in almost all paints, except those certified as low/no VOC. A new "green lobby" is being planned as well that Mosby Tower's management hopes will be complete by the early Spring.
