Legacy LEED AP vs LEED AP Plus: Which is Cheaper?

Question:

Should I take the LEED AP exam now or wait until the new LEED 2009 exams are in place???!

Get your butt into the GBCI testing center and take that exam today if you can!! Depending on which exam you are taking, it may already be too late. For LEED for Commercial Interiors 2.0 and LEED for New Construction 2.2 the last day to register for the LEED AP credentialing exams will be March 31, 2009 (11:59 PM, Eastern Time).

Registrations for the LEED EB 2.0 exam ended in September 2008.

There are a ton of reasons for taking the current LEED AP exam (which will make you a "Legacy LEED AP" under the new LEED 2009 rules) instead of a LEED AP+. Here are just a few suggestions for taking the LEED AP exam sooner rather than later:

1. One Exam vs. Two!: Under the new LEED 2009, to become a LEED AP+ you will need to pass two exams (the LEED Green Associate Exam (aka the "Core Exam") AND the LEED AP+ Specialty Exam). If you take the current LEED exam, you must pass only one exam!

2. It's Cheaper!: The cost of taking a current LEED exam is $300 for USGBC members and $400 for non-members.

However, in the LEED 2009 credentialing program, the cost of taking the LEED Green Associate Exam will be $150 for USGBC members and $200 for non-members (plus $50.00 application fee!). So, if you are applying to be a LEED Green Associate, as opposed to a LEED AP+, it's actually cheaper than the current exam, but apples to oranges, really.

However, THIS IS IN ADDITION TO the $300 required for the LEED AP+ Specialty Exam fee for USGBC members and $450 for non-members (plus $100 application fee!). Seems like a awful lot of fees for one credential (LEED AP+).

3. Easier!: Perhaps because of the increased number of questions, the new LEED exams are expected to be more difficult than the current versions with an expected pass rate of only 20%, compared to 34% for the current exams.

I have been a LEED AP since

I have been a LEED AP since 2004, which I assume makes me a "Legacy LEED AP". Is there any reason to take the new exam and become a LEED AP+? What are the benefits, if any?

Thanks

Legacy LEED AP

Hi,

The good news is you don't have to take the LEED AP+ exam and will automatically be a LEED AP+ by simply by agreeing to comply with the new LEED 2009 code of ethics (see more info here). By agreeing to the new LEED 2009 terms, you will become a LEED AP+ and can use the new designation (for your specialty area of expertise).

Best wishes,

the last date to take the Exam

So, I understand that the last time to Register for the Leed AP (Legacy) Exam is 31- March 2009, but when is the last date to take the Exam ?

Last Date for LEED AP (Legacy) Exam

Hi Ehab,

The short answer is "it depends". The Green Building Certification Institute develops the exams but the actual scheduling, rescheduling and canceling, etc... is overseen by a company called Prometric, so it depends on what's available in you're geographic area. Check Prometric's website or call Prometric, within the US, at 1-888-215-4154, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

Good luck!

LEED AP for GC

I am a large GC in upstate NY looking to become a LEED AP or even LEED Green Associate. what is the best way to study for these exams. Are there courses or study guides.

There are many resources

Literally..you can find a lot of help online..such as the USGBC website. There are also many forums in which test takers post study tips such as areforum.org. Everyone learns differently but for me the best way was to take a 2-day Intensive course hosted by Clean Edison...and I passed. They have classroom courses located all over the US, as well as private tutoring and online courses. They also have a great offer if you don't pass the test. They let you retake the course for free!

LEED Exam

I have already passed the LEED NC exam back in January. Is there any benefit whatsoveevr to me signing up to take the LEED CI exam at this point? ...or am I duplicating credentails that really do not differentiate? Tell me please...I only have one more day to sign up.
