How do I fit into the new LEED system as a current LEED AP?

Question:

Matthew asks: Can I remain as a Legacy AP for long-term? Or should I try to transfer over to a Green Associate?

Answer:

Matthew asks: I earned my LEED AP in 2008, however, I'm still a little confused with what I need to do regarding the new changes coming in 2009. Can I remain as a Legacy AP for long-term? Or should I try to transfer over to a Green Associate?

What are the pros & cons of each option?

What are the other existing APs planning to do going forward?

If I decide to transfer to a Green Associate, what is required? Have to retake the exam? Fees?

Answer: Hi Matthew, as a LEED AP, you rank higher than a LEED Green Associate. You may do nothing and call yourself a LEED AP. There should be no reason to take the LEED Green Associate exam, unless you're a rich masochist.

You may be confusing LEED Green Associate with LEED AP+. LEED AP+ is the new title for LEED AP and carries with it the specialty designation of your focus area (such as Operations and Maintenance, Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, etc.)

1) For existing LEED APs, you may become a LEED AP+ by enrolling in the new tiered 2009 system. To do this you must agree to the LEED 2009 Credentialing Maintenance Program (CMP), sign the Disciplinary Policy and complete the prescriptive CMP requirements for the initial 2-year reporting period. Once you have become a LEED AP+, you will use one of the new specialty suffixes (O&M, BD&C, ID&C) after your name. Enrollment must occur before June 2011.

2) You may also make the transition to LEED AP+ by passing one of the new specialty examinations, called the Tier II exam. Only the Tier II LEED AP+ exam will be required if testing by June 2011. Same rules apply here as described in the paragraph above.

3) Or, as a current LEED AP, you may choose to do nothing and you will continue to be designated a LEED AP without a specialty title (such as O&M, BD&C, ID&C) in the LEED Professional Directory.

If you choose to make the transition by choosing #1 above there are no fees to become a LEED AP+ if you enroll in the CMP between June 30, 2009, and June 30, 2011.
