ICC Green Building Residential Examiner Exam: Would LEED Prep Help?

Rich asks: Will the LEED prep help with preparing for the ICC national green building standard certification test?

Answer:
Hi Rich, the best way to study/prepare for the ICC exam is by studying the ICC codes and standards and applying any on the job experience you have applying the codes.

Unlike the new LEED 2009 Accredited Professional exams, the Code Council examinations are open book and also open to all individuals with no prerequisite for experience or education. The ICC exam is 50 multiple choice questions in open book format vs. 80 questions, closed book, for LEED.

So while you may learn a lot by studying the LEED preparation materials, and it may prepare you for a LEED AP or LEED Green Associate exam, it may not be directly applicable to passing the ICC Green Building Residential Examiner exam.

The ICC exam has similarities to the LEED exam. In principle, it covers major categories such as building systems and design, resource efficiency, indoor air quality, general plans and design and site selection.
