Dan asks:
I’ve noticed that there are several different types of training classes offered for LEED Exam Prep. I’m wondering what the differences are and how I can choose the best training class for myself?
Green-Buildings.com Answer:
Great question! There a wide variety of training classes available to help you prepare for the LEED Exam. Though all are comprehensive, the choice of which training class is best will differ from person to person.
Self-Starter? Fast-Learner? Comprehensive Study Guides are For You
Some people are do-it-yourself studiers and they do best with self-paced studying. If you are a self-starter and highly motivated, your best option for LEED Training is probably the LEED Study Guides, which include online and print versions. Once you have materials, you can study when and where you want.
Difficulty Getting Motivated? Learn Best from an Instructor? Online or Offline Intensive Classes are a Great Option
Many of us, however, have a hard time getting motivated to learn the LEED exam material on our own. We need that push that only a training class with an instructor can provide. If you are this kind of person, you will do best with offline or online LEED training class. With either option you will stand to benefit from instructor-led training session.
Strapped for Cash and Time? Online May Be Best
The choice of an online or offline LEED class, depends, of course, on a lot of different factors. For some of us, an offline class is cost-prohibitive, while others simply don’t have the time to attend an offline class.
Online LEED training classes are also excellent because they let you choose which modules you would like to watch. Additionally, you can review modules as many times as you like (in any order) and you get to watch the class as many times as you wish during the license period, which is usually 60 days.
Enjoy the Live Experience and Discussion with Fellow Colleagues? An Offline Course May Appeal to You
While often more expensive, live interaction with other students in the classroom can be invigorating. Offline classes allow attendees to actively participate, ask questions, address concerns and hear different points of view.
The best offline LEED Training classes and courses are taught by experienced green building professionals who are also LEED APs and who have been where you are now. Often instructors offer tips, tricks and first-hand knowledge of what to focus on in the exam. Also, instructors may be more up to date with the various errata that the USGBC/GBCI publishes whenever corrections are needed.
Each of us is Unique
To sum it up, each person is different and has unique needs. Your personality and specific situation are the best guides you can use to choosing the best LEED Training Class.
Good luck on the test!
