Kris asks: What does GBCI consider an "education program" which qualifies one to take the green associate exam? i have asked this question of USGBC and GBCI multiple times and they refuse to give me any answer other than an education program is an education program with a certificate. i finally got an honest answer from one rep who said, "we don't know." if a person attends an "education program" in a bar and gets a certificate, does that count? what if the education program is 20 minutes long? how can i be sure that GBCI will honor the "education program" i pay for and attend? it amazes me that they can't answer this. thanks so much.

Hi Kris:

The short answer is we know that two day, in-class courses, and certain 8 hour online classes (live and pre-recorded) qualify for the LEED Green Associate green class or "green course of study" requirement. But these requirements have yet to be adequately explained by the GBCI.

Probably a 15 minute course delivered by a drunk LEED AP instructor over beers at the local pub with a "Certificate" scribbled on a bar napkin wouldn't qualify... but then again, maybe the guy's a total green building rockstar and you pass the exam... Plus, the GBCI only audits a small percentage of total LEED GA applications... so perhaps it could after all! :)

In terms of the sustainable field of work requirement, which is another option for LEED GA candidates, almost any industry can be linked to sustainability in some way if it is undertaking efforts to improve the environment. If it passes the smell test, it's probably acceptable.

Good luck!

It seems to me that the GBCI

It seems to me that the GBCI doesn't take these courses and qualifications too seriously. Since most of the courses are no longer than two hours, i fail to see the difference between a real or a . Even more, I can't see how such courses can be helpful to anyone if they are not recognized by the LEED Green Association.

I had certain MPH

I had certain MPH questions that also needed to be answered, if they matter, if this is for real, being an online course... I don't really believe in two-hour courses, how much can one learn in such a short time? As for the bar, you'll definitely know that one course alone isn't enough.
