Eco-conscious, solid surfacing options for interior use are increasingly available. One such option is a product that consists of concrete and recycled glass. Two examples of are Meld USA’s ecoX and Ice Stone.
Recycled concrete surface materials may be used in both residential and commercial settings in a variety of horizontal and vertical applications. Uses include table, counter, and workstation tops; bathtubs, shower pans, sinks and their surrounds/backsplashes, as well as flooring.
When specifying recycled concrete surface materials look for those with a high percentage of recycled content. For example, Meld USA’s ecoX is made with nearly 70% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials, and Ice Stone uses 100% recycled glass. Also investigate the company’s overall commitment to sustainability within its manufacturing process (e.g., using grey water harvesting), as well as their location to your project’s site.
Recycled concrete solid surfaces can contribute LEED credits in the areas of recycled content (pre and/or post consumer), Low Emitting Materials, Innovation in Design, and local/regional materials (depending on the project location and product distribution point).
