Strategies for accomplishing this include specifying high efficiency waterless fixtures (such as waterless urinals and composting toilets) and reusing graywater and stormwater for sewage conveyance or on site wastewater treatment systems.

LEED Certification systems award points for utilizing wastewater treatment systems on-site and treating wastewater to "tertiary standards".
