Innovative Wastewater Technology: How Does it Help with LEED Certification?

Question:

Bharat asks: How does waste water treatment in commercial & industrial projects help qualify for green building/LEED rating?

Answer: Hi Bharat, in various LEED Certification systems, such as LEED CI 2.0, the intent of utilizing innovative wastewater technologies is to reduce the generation of wastewater and reduce demand for potable water use, while increasing the local aquifer charge.

Strategies for accomplishing this include specifying high efficiency waterless fixtures (such as waterless urinals and composting toilets) and reusing graywater and stormwater for sewage conveyance or on site wastewater treatment systems.

LEED Certification systems award points for utilizing wastewater treatment systems on-site and treating wastewater to "tertiary standards".

Hope this helps!
