LEED Green Associate... Can the USGBC Use a Man Like Joel?*

In the movie "Risky Business", Joel conducts his interview with Bill Rutherford from Princeton University amid the backdrop of his house being operated as a brothel. Afterwards, Lana asks Joel how it went...

"...Looks like the University of Illinois!!" Joel proudly responds.

Why is this anecdote relevant? Because I can't believe how many frickin' people are planning to take the LEED exam after studying for only a week!

IMHO, unless you've invested in one of those late night "Mega Memory" programs AND you're green building architect or engineer with 10 years on the job, you simply can't study for the LEED exam in a week and honestly expect to pass.

So to those who still have a week or so, if you're not ready, do yourself a favor and pay the $30 and cancel your exam with the GBCI and save yourself the $300/$400 it will cost when you walk into the exam (apparently that's how it's billed). Then take that $300/$400 savings and apply it towards investing in some good solid study materials and really preparing yourself for the LEED Green Associate exam. For anyone who fails the LEED AP exam this time around, LEED v3 awaits with its Tier I LEED Green Associate exam and the Tier II LEED AP+ exam.

While Joel's "What the f**k?" attitude is very wise in certain applications (he does get into Princeton), it doesn't apply to the LEED exam. So, for many aspiring LEED APs who are just now starting to study before taking their v2 exams over the next week and a half, I suspect the cry is going to be...

"Looks like LEED Green Associate!!"

*For the uninitiated, upon returning from vacation, Joel's father has a call with Bill Rutherford from Princeton who indicates "Princeton can use a man like Joel."
