Ken asks: I have known about the LEED system for some time but can't get past how I can enroll my products for LEED credits. I have had some tell me that my product would not fall under the LEED system but the Sustainable Sites Initiative. I have heard that these might merge or work together. Bottom line, I have an all plastic recycled tree grate product that I want to be recognized as either LEED or Sustainable Sites. Who and where do I turn for the answers to these questions?
Answer: Hi Ken,
Currently LEED only certifies buildings, not products. There is no way to enroll your products for inclusion in the LEED system. The LEED certification process simultaneously measures the performance of multiple, complimentary (and sometimes conflicting) building characteristics, the major categories of which contain rules for awarding points for compliance under the LEED system. Your recycled tree grate would most likely fall under the Materials and Resources (MR) credit category and the use of recycled content and/or regional materials.
The Sustainable Sites Initiative is a work in progress and is developing a rating system to encourage more sustainable practices that enhance human health and well-being in the constant relationshipbetween us and our built environment. There is no clear product rating system yet, from what I know.
Hope this helps!
