New LEED AP Requirements: What Are They and How Do I Comply?

Nick asks: I'd like to meet the necessary requirements/eligibility to take the LEED GA & LEED AP test concurrently. I understand I need to abide by LEED v3, but I have been unable to find a USGBC education course near Chicago. I am currently a financial advisor therefore I'm not working on a LEED project or in a sustainable field. In a former career I was a 3rd party project manager supervising large scale hotel renovations for Marriott and other REIT owned properties.

Any suggestions as to attaining these accreditation(s) as efficiently as possible. I'm recently co-founded a start up company that focuses on energy efficiency and green technology and would like to take the test in November.

Answer: Hi Nick, thanks for your email.

Depending on which LEED AP track you're interested in (such as LEED BD+C, ID+C, EBO+M, etc.) the most efficient way would be to purchase a LEED Reference Guide for that track from the USGBC and consider using a study guide, LEED practice exams and/or other products to get yourself ready for taking both the Tier I LEED GA exam and the Tier II LEED AP specialty exam. However, as you mention in your email, you'll also need experience on a LEED Certification project in order to qualify to sit for the LEED AP exam.

In terms of gaining this experience, Green-Buildings.com offers LEED AP candidates who are not employed in a sustainable field with a Green Building Professional Training Program.

This program will engage you on a LEED Certification project to earn the experience you need to satisfy the prerequisites for the LEED AP examination.

The Green Building Professional Training Program package includes:

- Team Member Registration with access to LEED Online
- Weekly meeting attendance – see what it’s like to work on a project team!
- Learn administrative processes
- Access to archived meetings online, available to you 24/7
- Certificate of Completion
- Letter of Attestation to submit to the GBCI for LEED AP Specialty Exam registration (issued upon successful completion of an exit exam, which determines your knowledge of basic LEED administrative processes)

Once you have fulfilled the LEED AP and LEED GA prerequisites, you should be all set to register and sit for the LEED AP exam.

Once you earn your LEED AP credential, you will be at a distinct advantage over non-accredited individuals for growing number of opportunities in sustainability throughout the U.S. and abroad.
