Detailed Description:

The GreenStep Professional Project Experience Program allows green building professionals to work on a LEED registered project from virtually anywhere.

Alex Spilger, founder of GreenStep and the LEED project experience team leader, has worked with Google, Salesforce.com, Skype and many other companies to help them achieve LEED certification for their buildings and meet their sustainability goals.

By successfully completing the GreenStep program, participants will not only be eligible to take the LEED AP exam, but also have a solid understanding of the processes involved in managing a LEED certification project.

This GreenStep Project Experience program is delivered 100% online and is designed for the green building professional who, due to geographic or other constraints, is unable to access a LEED registered project. The program is perfect for professionals who are looking to go beyond the basics to gain a deeper understanding of LEED and the various phases of LEED certification.

LEED v4 vs. LEED v2009

The USGBC has committed to continually updating the LEED Rating Systems every few years to adopt to new technologies, streamline the Certification process and increase the level of standards that projects must meet for each Certification level. The latest update to the LEED Rating Systems is LEED version 4 which launched in November 2013 and includes significant changes from LEED v2009.

While LEED v4 is officially up and running, LEED v2009 still remains current, relevant and widely popular. Projects will be able to continue to register under LEED v2009 through mid-2015 which means that LEED v2009 will likely remain relevant through 2017 and beyond for projects with longer schedules.

Most of the clients we are currently working with have opted to register their projects under LEED v2009, rather than LEED v4, since it is the more established Rating System and since the industry has not yet fully adapted to meet specific LEED v4 criteria for certain Credits. Furthermore, the LEED AP Exams will still be based on the LEED v2009 Rating Systems through May 2013 at which point they will switch over to LEED v4. As such, we will continue to use LEED v2009 projects for our LEED Professional Project Experience Program until we see a more widespread adoption of the new LEED v4 system. As part of our program, we will compare and contrast LEED v2009 with LEED v4 so that project participants have a working knowledge of both systems moving forward.

Program Background:

Through a thoughtful and practical approach, GreenStep Education has developed the Professional Project Experience Program to engage green building and LEED professionals in a real LEED Registered Project.

For LEED exam candidates, GBCI requires that any green building professional wishing to take the LEED AP exam must demonstrate previous experience working on a LEED Registered Project.

This experience must be documented in the form of a letter of attestation from a supervisor, client or project manager and describe the candidate's involvement in the project. The candidate's experience must have occurred within three (3) years of the date of the application with GBCI.

A detailed Letter of Attestation for submission to GBCI is provided to individuals who successfully complete the Professional Project Experience program.

"I want to thank you for providing the opportunity of obtaining the project experience. I truly appreciate all the effort provided by you & Alex. "Alex, I passed the LEED EBOM exam last week with a 182 and it is directly because of your teaching, coaching and insights – thank you! The project experience was very helpful because it gave me a rounded knowledge of what is needed to pass the AP exam. Another big thing to me is how you would spend whatever time necessary to answer questions about the project, or anything regarding the USGBC. You have returned all my emails very quickly and that is much appreciated. I wish there were more people in the business world like you. You have been a pleasure to work with and I hope I run into you in the near future."

“The Professional Project Experience Program provided the hands on experience I needed to not only sit for the LEED AP BD+C exam, but also to apply to other LEED registered projects. Alex presented the material in a thorough and professional manner. He is well versed on all LEED rating systems. I am proud to say that the Professional Project Experience Program was an integral part in earning my LEED AP BD+C credential. Thank you GreenStep and Green-Buildings.com!”
Daniel S., P.E., LEED AP BD+C

"Once again...many thanks for your online training programand project experience ...I could not have received my LEED AP (Homes)without your training program! And I got it first time around using only your information , not the USGBC reference guide which would have been too much to take in all at once. The simulated questions prepared me well...although I think you should make them a tad bit more difficulties the exam was definitely tough. I got 89% so I was happy! I think I'll just do the online courses for interest and continuing education...."
Liz C.

"The project experience and review sessions were essential to getting an understanding of the intricacies of the LEED project process and determining credits. The online sessions were direct and very helpful. The implementation of the LinkedIn discussion group is a great idea and one that I think I will begin to use more as time goes on. I think anything that can help broaden the LEED community and the ability to connect will help those, like me, who are new to LEED and looking to grow within it."

Michael G.

"Thank you so very much, I had taken the LEED AP exam in June 2009 just once at it's last days of the program, but never experienced what I learned from the project experience. I think it is such a brilliant idea, given a chance to experience the program. since I did not pass it then, this time I think I am suppose to take the green associate first. which without your project experience program would never be able to do. My goal is to go all the way to LEED AP after the associate and hopefully find a full time job where I can practice for many years to come..."

Nadia R.

"This is just to let you know that I passed the exam. I wanted some more info on the other courses. Let me know soonest."

Colin J.

"Thanks for the experience program, I really enjoyed it and look forward to my future career as a LEED AP."

Francois L.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you again for this great effort and support you are giving us in our professional careers. The course was very helpful and complete, as well as easy to digest and memorize. We wish all the others good luck and success on their testing dates."
