LEED Project Experience: How Do I Sit for the LEED AP Exam if I'm Not Employed in a Sustainable Field?

Marie asks: It seems like the GBCI doesn't want people to become LEED APs if they're not already in a green job... How do I get LEED project experience to qualify for the LEED AP exam? I've already decided to take the LEED GA exam, but I haven't registered and I don't necessarily want to wait. Where do I get experience if I'm not "qualified"??!

Answer: Hi Marie, thank you for your email. With the recent launch of the LEED v3 Tiered Credentialing system, the Green Building Certification Institute has made it more difficult for those interested in earning the LEED AP credential to be eligible to do so.

New! Check out our popular LEED Professional Project Experience Program to help you fulfill the LEED AP Project Experience Requirement

The GBCI requires individuals who want to become eligible for the LEED AP with Specialty credential to have previous experience working on a LEED Registered Project within three (3) years of the candidate's application submittal date. Furthermore, the candidate's work experience must be documented in the form of a letter of attestation from a supervisor, client or project manager and must describe your involvement on the LEED Registered Project as a consultant, contracted worker, member of the LEED Project Team, LEED Homes Provider, LEED Commercial Reviewer, LEED Homes Green Verifier or staff member of a Certifying Body (CB).

For candidates who are intellectually ready to take the LEED AP exam, but who are blocked from doing so because of lack of LEED project experience, Green-Buildings.com offers a LEED Professional Project Experience Program.

The thirty (30) day program will engage you on a LEED Certification project to earn the experience you need to satisfy the prerequisites for the LEED AP examination.
