Scott asks: What is the USGBC's building performance requirement?
Answer: Hi Scott,
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that it has launched a system to better track actual LEED rated building performance through the Building Performance Initiative (BPI).
Under the most recent version of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, the USGBC requires LEED rated buildings to provide performance data. The BPI will collect data and analyze actual performance (use of energy, electricity and water) with predicted (rated) performance. If gaps are found between predicted and actual performance, building owners and project teams will be better equipped to act to close or eliminate those gaps.
The old saying goes "You can't manage what you don't measure"... and the BPI intends to address this issue head on. As a building is a living, dynamic system, the tracking of data is critical in order to ensure high-performance is maintained.
