Stew asks: Hello, I live in a rural area in Vermont and work in western Massachusetts. Could someone advise me on where and how to start LEED training with books and online. I know nothing about LEED but want to get my LEED-GA and then eventually my LEED-AP. I am a high end residential and commercial HVAC designer with no engineering degree but 25+ years in the business. I would like to start riding the green wave toward increasing my worth with my present employer + looking to start a consulting business when I retire.
Answer: Hi Steve, that reads like an awesome future plan... Please let me know if you need some help and maybe I'll join you! OK, knee-jerk enthusiasm aside, the best place to start is by getting familiar with the fundamentals of LEED and green building by studying for the LEED Green Associate exam. We would suggest doing either of the following:
1) Start at the GBCI website and download the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook. In this handbook, you will find lots of information, instructions and resources to start familiarizing yourself with the LEED Green Associate exam and preparation materials. Frankly, in terms of the study materials, as you'll see, the GBCI is offering links to all this material from almost twenty separate references. This is not very helpful for aspiring LEED Green Associates. The handbook's suggested materials are very broad and broken down only in "Primary References" and "Ancillary References". While the USGBC offers helpful reference guides for LEED AP candidates, if the USGBC has developed a LEED Green Associate reference guide, we are not aware of it... but if not... why not?
2) A more efficient approach may be to buy a LEED Green Associate study guide (and a solid LEED exam simulator) and/or enroll in traditional offline LEED Green Associate training or online LEED Green Associate training, or do both. LEED GA study guides are helpful and excellent time saving tools for studying the LEED Green Associate material. We have received a lot of positive feedback from students who have passed the LEED Green Associate exam after studying with the tools we offer.
Hope this helps and good luck!
